It is heart breaking to see Sarah saying, “This means that I am going to die in prison!”. U.S is one of few countries where juveniles can be tried in a court of law and can be sentenced to life in prison. The number of children who were sentenced to life in U.S is staggering 2270.

Sarah Kruzan spent a very unfortunate childhood with her drug addicted mother in Riverside California. Sarah’s mother was not only addicted to drugs but also abusive. It is hard to imagine the life of a child in these circumstances. The situation also determines what Sarah did. It is only natural for a child in such conditions to seek protection outside of his or her home and the sad fact is that predators are all around looking for such children. As the fate would have it, Sarah met a man named G.G when she was 11. G.G became a pseudo father for Sarah. He would give her things to play with and would take her for rides. As Sarah turned 13, it was pay back time. G.G put Sarah up for prostitution.

BBC NEWS – Berlusconi immunity law overruled

Italy's highest court has overturned a law granting Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi immunity from prosecution while in office.

The Constitutional Court annulled the law, which had allowed him to withdraw from several cases. In one he was facing corruption charges.

Opponents say immunity violates the principle that all citizens are equal.

A spokesman for Mr Berlusconi said the verdict was "politically motivated" and insisted he would not resign.

"Berlusconi, the government and the majority will continue to govern," spokesman Paolo Bonaiuti said.

'Distractions'

There has been speculation in Italy that at least two court cases against the prime minister could resume if the law was annulled.

The BBC's Duncan Kennedy, in Rome, says the news has stunned Italy, where he has widespread public support, although that has dipped in recent times.

Posada Carriles Built Bombs for, and Informed on, Jorge Mas Canosa, CIA Records Reveal

Washington, D.C., October 6, 2009 – On the 33rd anniversary of the bombing of Cubana flight 455, the National Security Archive today posted recently obtained CIA records on Luis Posada Carriles, his ties to "the Company" and role as an informant on other violent exile groups. The documents provide extensive details on a collaboration between Cuban-American militant Jorge Mas Canosa, who rose to become the most powerful leader of the hardline exile community in Miami, and Posada—codenamed AMCLEVE 15—who volunteered to spy on violent exile operations for the CIA.

The documents include a July 1966 memo from Posada, using the name "Pete" to his CIA handler Grover Lythcott requesting permission to join the coordinating junta for four violent exile groups, including RECE run by Mas Canosa. "I will give the Company all the intelligence that I can collect," Posada wrote. "I will gain a more solid position between the exiles and, because of that…

No, the man being honored by 500 fellow Cuban Americans at a sold-out gala was Luis Posada Carriles, the former CIA operative wanted in Venezuela on terrorism charges and under a deportation order for illegally entering the United States three years ago.

Posada, 80, has mostly kept a low profile since his release from a Texas prison a year ago and a federal judge's dismissal of the only U.S. charges against him — making false statements to immigration officials.

NH tax evader gets 35 years in prison for standoff – washingtonpost.com

CONCORD, N.H. — A New Hampshire woman sentenced to 35 years in prison Friday for plotting to kill federal agents during a nine-month standoff at her fortress-like home said she will continue to fight government corruption from behind bars.

It's a near-universal assumption of the healthcare debate that the current system is a market system and it is broken, and hence we should try a government system. The people who assume this aren't considering the last 100 years of healthcare policy. Government is deeply involved at all levels, from medical licensure and patents, to direct subsidies and provision, to employee mandates and insurance-pooling controls, at all levels.

It's been a steady path to medical serfdom all the way, under both parties, and this is precisely what accounts for most of the problems that people complain about. Meanwhile, the private dimensions of the healthcare system are what accounts for its merits.

So what are we doing? The very opposite of what we should be doing: more control instead of more freedom, more spending instead of less, more mandates instead of fewer. The logic of interventionism is taking over: problems are being addressed by more of what caused the problems…

Brian Rawson Steps Down as Texas CTO

After leading Texas' massive IT consolidation and outsourcing initiative for nearly three years, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Brian Rawson resigned Wednesday, Sept. 30, as executive director of the state's Department of Information Resources (DIR).

Rawson will move to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and serve as its director of statewide data initiatives, according to a statement released by the DIR. Karen Robinson, director of administration and technology for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, was named interim state CTO. Rawson will remain with the DIR for several weeks to help with the transition, the agency said.

The statement gave no reason for Rawson's resignation, and a call to the Texas DIR wasn't returned late Wednesday afternoon.

Critical Audit
An Aug. 31 state auditor's report criticized the DIR for failing to adequately oversee the $863 million data center consolidation. According to the Austin-American Statesman, deficiencies included not verifying outsourcing contractor

Those of you who saw An Inconvenient Truth may remember, if you weren’t asleep by that stage, the key scene where big green Al deploys his terrifying graph to show how totally screwed we all are by man-made global warming. This graph – known as the Hockey Stick Curve – purports to show rising global temperatures through the ages. In the part representing the late twentieth century it shoots up almost vertically. To emphasise his point that this is serious and that if we don’t act NOW we’re doomed, Al Gore – wearing a wry smile which says: “Sure folks, this is kinda funny. But don’t forget how serious it is too” – climbs on to a mini-lift in order to be able to reach the top of the chart. Cue consensual gasps from his parti pris audience.

Except that the graph – devised in 1998 by a US climatologist called Dr Michael Mann – is based on a huge lie, as Sceptics have been saying for quite some time.

Campaign asks for international treaty to limit war robots – New Scientist

A robotics expert, a physicist, a bioethicist and a philosopher have founded the International Committee for Robot Arms Control (ICRAC) to campaign for limits on robotic military hardware.

Roboticist Noel Sharkey at the University of Sheffield, UK, and his colleagues set up ICRAC after a two-day meeting in Sheffield earlier this month. Sharkey has spoken before of ethical concerns about military systems that make their own decisions.

"Robot weapons are likely to change the character of warfare," Sharkey told New Scientist. "We seem to be rushing headlong into the development of autonomous weapons systems without any real concern for the long-term impact on civilian populations."
