By Joshua Davis

Yitzhaq Hayutman holds the key to peace on Earth - it’s on a floppy disk in his pants pocket. With his full white beard, bald pate, and well-pressed khakis, the 61-year-old Israeli cybernetics expert and tech investor looks like Moses done over for a Banana Republic ad. Right now, he’s showing me how he wants to position an airborne hologram over the Dome of the Rock, a gold-capped shrine that’s one of the most holy sites in Islam. “The blimp will go there,” Hayutman says pointing into the blue. “And eventually the Messiah will come.”

Hayutman is excited by the prospect - perhaps too excited. Twenty yards away, two flak-jacketed Israeli police officers finger their machine guns while four plainclothes members of the Islamic Trust - the Muslim force that protects Islam’s holy sites - move cautiously toward us. Violence has a habit of erupting here on the Temple Mount, the world’s most explosive plot of land.

Let there be light: The site is the sky above the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The project includes a laser-projected temple. The goal: to summon the Messiah.

For 1,500 years, Jews, Christians, and Muslims have fought for control of this 35-acre plateau in the heart of Jerusalem. The dispute remains one of the main obstacles to peace in the Middle East. Jewish teachings say that a temple must be built here - many say on the exact spot where the Dome now stands - in order to induce the arrival of the Messiah and the coming of peace on Earth. Fundamentalist Christians interpret this to mean the Second Coming of Christ and actively encourage Jewish building efforts. Muslims categorically oppose any encroachment on their holy site, from which they believe Mohammed ascended to heaven to receive the Koran.

All sides acknowledge that tensions on the hill have the potential to start a war, but Hayutman believes he has found a way to resolve the intractable conflict. “What most people see is that if the Muslims are here, surely there is no temple,” Hayutman says. “They do not understand that technology has given us the tools to realize the prophecy right now.”

He has two big ideas, two ways to engineer the apocalypse. The first: a hovering holographic temple. Hayutman wants to set up an array of high-powered, water-cooled lasers and fire them into a transparent cube suspended beneath a blimp. The ephemeral, flickering image, he says, would fulfill an ancient, widely revered Jewish prophecy that the temple will descend from the heavens as a manifestation of light. Hayutman hopes to finance the project with some of the proceeds from a $20 million patent-infringement suit he and his partners have filed against Palm.

The rest of that money would be poured into Hayutman’s second idea for jump-starting the end-times: a virtual temple within a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The goal is for thousands of people to join in its construction on the Web. Hayutman even wants to display progress reports in the floating hologram as a kind of apocalyptic scoreboard

The University of California, Irvine explains:

The brain-computer interface would use a noninvasive brain imaging technology like electroencephalography to let people communicate thoughts to each other. For example, a soldier would “think” a message to be transmitted and a computer-based speech recognition system would decode the EEG signals. The decoded thoughts, in essence translated brain waves, are transmitted using a system that points in the direction of the intended target.

The latest arms race will take place entirely inside the human mind. So say top scientists with the U.S. military, who have gotten quite a bit of government funding to explore things like memory-enhancing drugs, mind-reading binoculars, and brain-computer interfaces. Today Danger Room’s Noah Shachtman reports on how the U.S. military’s greatest fear these days, at least as it looks to the future, is losing the brain enhancement race to other nations that are creating souped-up super-soldiers.

Writes Shachtman:

In a recent report, unearthed by Secrecy News, the [Pentagon science advisory team] JASONs are recommending that the American military push ahead with its own performance-enhancement research — and monitor foreign studies — to make sure that the U.S.’ enemies don’t suddenly become smarter, faster, or better able to endure the harsh realities of war than American troops.

Lauria describes how he recently interviewed one of the FBI agents at his home for 90 minutes, and met another of Sibel’s former bosses several times outside his house. The agents are unwilling to provide detailed corroboration on a lot of the details in the case because they fear being sent to prison, but their willingness to speak to Lauria about the case, and their supportive statements that “She’s not crazy,” provide generalized corroboration on the case.

Speaking at the Campus Progress journalism conference earlier this month, Seymour Hersh — a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist for The New Yorker — revealed that Bush administration officials held a meeting recently in the Vice President’s office to discuss ways to provoke a war with Iran.

In Hersh’s most recent article, he reports that this meeting occurred in the wake of the overblown incident in the Strait of Hormuz, when a U.S. carrier almost shot at a few small Iranian speedboats. The “meeting took place in the Vice-President’s office. ‘The subject was how to create a casus belli between Tehran and Washington,’” according to one of Hersh’s sources.

During the journalism conference event, I asked Hersh specifically about this meeting and if he could elaborate on what occurred. Hersh explained that, during the meeting in Cheney’s office, an idea was considered to dress up Navy Seals as Iranians, put them on fake Iranian speedboats, and shoot at them. This idea, intended to provoke an Iran war, was ultimately rejected:

HERSH: There was a dozen ideas proffered about how to trigger a war. The one that interested me the most was why don’t we build — we in our shipyard — build four or five boats that look like Iranian PT boats. Put Navy seals on them with a lot of arms. And next time one of our boats goes to the Straits of Hormuz, start a shoot-up.

Might cost some lives. And it was rejected because you can’t have Americans killing Americans. That’s the kind of — that’s the level of stuff we’re talking about. Provocation. But that was rejected.

Watch it:

Hersh argued that one of the things the Bush administration learned during the encounter in the Strait of Hormuz was that, “if you get the right incident, the American public will support” it.

“Look, is it high school? Yeah,” Hersh said. “Are we playing high school with you know 5,000 nuclear warheads in our arsenal? Yeah we are. We’re playing, you know, who’s the first guy to run off the highway with us and Iran.”

HERSH: There was a meeting. Among the items considered and rejected — which is why the New Yorker did not publish it, on grounds that it wasn’t accepted — one of the items was why not…

There was a dozen ideas proffered about how to trigger a war.

So I can understand the argument for not writing something that was rejected — uh maybe. My attitude always towards editors is they’re mice training to be rats.

But the point is jejune, if you know what that means. Silly? Maybe. But potentially very lethal. Because one of the things they learned in the incident was the American public, if you get the right incident, the American public will support bang-bang-kiss-kiss. You know, we’re into it.

…What happened in the Gulf was, in the Straits, in early January, the President was just about to go to the Middle East for a visit. So that was one reason they wanted to gin it up. Get it going.

Look, is it high school? Yeah. Are we playing high school with you know 5,000 nuclear warheads in our arsenal? Yeah we are. We’re playing, you know, who’s the first guy to run off the highway with us and Iran.

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration unveiled a plan to impose new tolls on freeways and encourage more private investment to finance road and mass-transit projects, a move aimed at stirring debate as lawmakers prepare for a major overhaul of transportation policy.

The White House says more tolls and public-private partnerships can solve perhaps the biggest problem confronting the nation’s aging infrastructure: There are limited funds available to upgrade transportation networks and too many federal funds are doled out inefficiently through earmarks and pet projects that do little to improve mobility or reduce congestion.

The search for alternative funding sources is ramping up because Americans are driving less and shifting to more fuel-efficient vehicles. That means they will be paying less in gasoline and diesel-fuel taxes, which traditionally have been the biggest source of federal funding for highway and mass-transit construction.

Many states are moving to increase existing tolls. Pennsylvania, for example, is hoping to win federal permission for new tolls on a standing interstate. Meanwhile, several states are turning to business consortiums to finance, build and operate new highways, bridges and tunnels, although a political backlash has slowed the push in recent years.

The administration’s proposal comes as Congress gears up to start work later this year on a six-year transportation spending bill that could cost well more than $400 billion. The last multiyear bill, which expires in September 2009, carried a $286 billion tab.

Earlier this year, a bipartisan commission concluded the nation is spending only about 40% of what is needed to reduce congestion, improve safety and spur economic growth. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters served on the commission but dissented from the majority view that gas taxes should more than double in coming years to support a big increase in transportation spending.

Ms. Peters says gas-tax rates should hold steady — at 18.4 cents a gallon for regular gasoline and 24.4 cents a gallon for diesel, where they have stood for more than a decade — and private money and toll revenue can address any needed increases in funding. She declined Tuesday to say how much more the U.S. needs to increase its overall spending on transportation infrastructure. Instead, she suggested ways to make transportation spending less wasteful.

“Our federal approach to transportation is broken,” she said. “And no amount of tweaking, adjusting or adding new layers on top will make things better.”

Many Democrats objected to the administration’s plan, saying it could have gone further in identifying ways to raise investment and spur projects that could unclog major choke points. Perhaps the most common complaint centered on the shift in reliance from gas taxes to private-sector dollars.

“It’s basically an opportunity for people who have wanted to systematically reduce the federal participation in infrastructure,” said Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D., Ore.), who is spearheading a transportation debate in the House. “It’s going to fall with a thud.”

The two major presidential candidates haven’t released detailed plans on transportation funding, even as the issue is sure to be one of next year’s biggest legislative battles. Republican Sen. John McCain has stressed the need to eliminate earmarks and pet projects. Democratic Sen. Barack Obama supports the creation of a $60 billion national infrastructure bank that would fund projects of regional and national significance. The two have also sparred over Mr. McCain’s proposal to give consumers a gas-tax holiday this summer.

Webster Tarpley bij Docks at the Docks - Historical changes in false flag terrorism
‘What we need to know for 2008-2009′
By Webster Tarpley for Docs at the Docks

As students of the manipulation of the political and social process by intelligence agencies through false flag terrorism and through other forms of covert operations, we need to be aware that the intelligence agencies are not Johnny one note, but rather change their tactics as the world political and economic situation evolves.

One of the main problems we face today is that, by all indications, the phase of false flag terrorism which began in the late 1990s and which reached its peak between September 11, 2001 and July 7, 2005 is ending, and is in the process of being replaced by something quite different. The old phase was centered on exerting social and political control through mass fear of bin Laden, Al Qaeda, Islamofascism, and Islamic fundamentalism in general.

The new phase involves a completely different set of targets. Iran and the Arab countries are no longer the main objectives. They have been replaced by Russia , China , the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the other countries that gravitate around this new pole of world politics. Yet, many of those who have dedicated much energy trying to expose the false flag operations of the post-9/11 period which is now essentially behind us are failing to identify the fact of sweeping change, and are repeating the slogans of the Bush-Cheney-neocon era as if everything were still as it was. We need to sum up the lessons of the 9/11-7/7 era, above all the central idea that these terrorist attacks were covert operations by US and British intelligence, and that they were made to happen on purpose and completely orchestrated from Washington and London. And then we need to look ahead.

The essence of false flag operations and other covert operations is that the same methods cannot be used for ever, but must be changed. In the first half of the 19th century, the British used the extreme nationalism of the Mazzini networks to destabilize their enemies. Around 1850, the main cover story for terrorism became the international anarchist movement and this was used well into the 1930s, especially for purposes of political assassination. In the 1950s and 1960s, the standard explanation for terrorism was the deranged loner, such as Lee Harvey Oswald. In the 1960s and 70s, methods radically changed, with youthful leftists and communist terrorists of college-age taking center stage: here we see the Weathermen in the United States, the Baader-Meinhof group in Germany, and the Red Brigades in Italy (this is a phase which resembles the one now starting). In the 1970s and 1980s, this was supplemented by the radical Arab and Palestinian political terrorism of Abu Nidal and Black September. Even during this period, there was also the rise of Islamic fundamentalist terrorism. In the 1990s, especially in the United States, the focus shifted completely to right wing anarchist militias who wanted to destroy the government: Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City bombing are the leading example. By the late 90s the scene had changed again to focus on Al Qaeda and bin Laden. Now the credibility and usefulness of the 9/11 mythology has been exhausted, and we need to ask what will come next.

In order to answer this, we need to see that the historical predicament of US and British imperialism has qualitatively deteriorated even compared to 2001. We are living through the death agony of the US dollar, the constant threat of banking panic and systemic breakdown in the London and New York banking systems and capital markets, and the specter of worldwide hyperinflation centering on the dollar. At the same time, a powerful combination of adversary states has emerged around Russia, China, and the other members of the Shanghai cooperation organization. The most influential response to this situation is the one articulated by Zbigniew Brzezinski, the dean of the Democratic Party foreign policy establishment going back to the Jimmy Carter regime and even earlier. Brzezinski’s name is associated we have a new strategy which calls for a de-emphasis of the Middle East in favor of a global approach to crushing the power of Russia and China once and for all. In the short run this new strategy creates for some the illusion that a relaxation of world tensions might be at hand. But in the medium to longer term, the dangers of the Brzezinski strategy are even greater than those of the neocon approach followed under Bush and Cheney, because Russia and China remain powerful states with intercontinental ballistic missiles and hydrogen bombs, and a determined to defend themselves.

The Obama candidacy for the US presidency is the vehicle chosen by the Rockefeller-Trilateral-Bilderberger international banking faction to carry out this new and more radical approach to securing another century of world domination for the US and the British. In the course of this, we must remember that although the so-called global war on terror has been one of the main features of US propaganda, we have also witnessed a series of CIA people power coups or color revolutions over recent years in places like Ukraine and Georgia . It is likely that the US and the British will rely much more unease methods in the near future than they have in the recent past, including an attempt to overthrow or at least we can the government of China , perhaps as early as this year. Irrationalist mass movements reminiscent of the 1920s and 1930s will be increasingly common in both the US and Europe , and Japan as well.

As far as terrorism specifically is concerned, we can expect the new wave of false flag actions, when it emerges, to involve groups that will allow popular anger and fear to be directed against countries like Russia , China , Pakistan , Sudan , and others of this group. If we take into account the Virginia Tech student massacre and the similar shootings at Northern Illinois University during the past year, we may be able to guess that there will also be a new round of domestic, homegrown terrorism in the wealthier countries revolving around college students or young people who are concerned about social justice. We can also expect a new round of ecological terrorism on the Unabomber of Earth First models.

It is therefore necessary that we realize that 2008 has been a year of very rapid change in the world strategic situation, and that we must be ready for new forms of terrorism as well as for new forms of mass political manipulation in general. There are numerous signs that we may be entering a new fascist era (or postmodern fascist era), and that irrationalist mass movements may be the breeding grounds for new forms of terrorism and new pretexts for top-down police state controls.
